Overview
Gilles Mingasson works as a photojournalist and on-set photographer for film and television in Hollywood. Tokyo (Un)Explained, his debut book, brings these two visual languages together in a nuanced exploration of a city he knows intimately, yet still experiences as a foreigner. The book wanders across Tokyo’s seldom visited neighborhoods, observing ordinary lives unfold as if they were carefully scripted. Mingasson focuses on small and often overlooked everyday rituals, the practical arrangement of things, and fleeting moments of solitude in the heart of the city. The settings, both homogeneous and chaotic, reflect a culture enduring in a changing world. Like a time capsule nearing its limit, Tokyo’s working- and middle-class neighborhoods stoically resist the rampant globalization of tastes and aesthetics.
