It's truly impossible to weigh the balance between the majesty of trees and their importance to our ecosystem against the immeasurable educational value we gain from reading books. We, at The Book Company, recognize the impact that the books we sell have on trees and on our environment. That's why we support the reforestation programs of American Forests, by donating a portion of our proceeds each year to help plant trees across America.
American Forests has been restoring forests for more than 140 years. And, while they may be the oldest national conservation organization, their work today is more important than ever. Since 1990 alone, they have planted nearly 60 million trees in forest restoration projects in all 50 states. They have also worked in dozens of cities across America, expanding tree canopy and improving the quality of life for residents.
Together, these projects recover hundreds of thousands of acres of wildlife habitat, safeguard vital watersheds, absorb millions of tons of greenhouse gases and protect some of the most stunning landscapes in America. At the same time, they are using trees and greenspace to make our communities more sustainable, beautiful and livable.
