Overview
Across the eastern end of Long Island, weathered barns and windmills have stood for centuries as quiet markers of the landscape.
Shingled in cedar and shaped by utility, their spare forms belong to the agricultural history of the region—and to its enduring visual identity. More than remnants of another era, they are a kind of living history, preserving the character and soul of the Hamptons and the generations that shaped it.
Hamptons Barns brings together more than 100 of these structures, photographed by Blair Getz Mezibov over the course of seven years, from Center Moriches to Montauk. Dating as far back as the 17th century, they appear here as both architecture and portrait: silvered shingles, pitched roofs and simple geometries set against open fields, winter snow and coastal light.
Mezibov, a New York–based fashion and fine art photographer, was first drawn to these buildings through their restraint—the purity of their lines, the patina of age and the histories they represent. Over time, they became more than architectural subjects. Like the portraits that define his broader practice, these structures offered a way to tell a story: of the farmers, artists and communities who came before, and of a landscape whose beauty is inseparable from its heritage.
At once an architectural survey and a personal record, Hamptons Barns preserves a disappearing vernacular—and with it, a distinct expression of American place.
