From squishing paint under wheelchair tires to feeling the swishy silk of a costume to telling stories with their hands, eyes, and voices, the artists engage their senses and show that art is as much about play and process as it is about a finished creation.
Backmatter includes an art activity that highlights inclusive and accessible tools and techniques, plus a behind-the-scenes exploration of how the book was made, with contributions from the author, the illustrator, and from multidisciplinary artist and disability justice activist Shay Erlich.
