Overview
Have you ever smiled at a restaurant's bathroom doors, thinking the owner had perfectly encapsulated the place's spirit in them? How peculiar it is to think that what seems like such a small detail can reveal so much. Often separated, coded, and stereotyped, these signs also reveal how deeply gendered our everyday spaces remain. Based on these observations, Armelle Daugy began collecting photos of bathroom doors, capturing them everywhere she went. What started as a light-hearted habit gradually turned into a kind of collective obsession, with friends and family sending in their own photos from different cities and countries. Water Closet brings together a selection of the best of them, in an attempt to showcase the creative diversity that this often overlooked space can embody.
