  • Overview

    ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

Vargas Llosa, His Other Great Passion is the first political biography of Mario Vargas Llosa, Nobel Prize winner in Literature and one of the most influential intellectuals of our time.

This thoroughly researched work offers a dynamic and well-documented account of his political journey. From his early involvement with the communist cell Cahuide at the National University of San Marcos, through his support for the Cuban Revolution and eventual break with it—for not being the “socialism in freedom” he believed in—to his ideological shift toward liberalism and the long, grueling presidential campaign he led in Peru during the 1980s. Though he did not win, his electoral message ultimately prevailed, contributing to the country’s radical economic transformation.

This passionate testimony, told by a close witness: Pedro Cateriano, longtime friend and political ally of the novelist, reviews one by one the many battles Vargas Llosa fought against dictatorships of all kinds, his most heated controversies, and—above all—his fervent defense of the culture of freedom as a global citizen, a fight he continues to this day.
