Overview
Three Tales represents the culmination and synthesis of Flaubert’s mastery.
By the author of Madame Bovary.
Flaubert’s Three Tales, published in 1877, were received with unanimous praise by critics, unlike his earlier works. In many ways, they embody the synthesis of Flaubert’s narrative skill and are thematically or stylistically linked to his previous writings.
In “Alma de dios”, the life of Félicité, a faithful servant who grows old in the company of her parrot Loulou, is portrayed; “La leyenda de San Julián el Hospitalario” is a striking medieval tale about a sadistic hunter, where Flaubert draws from religious literature to craft a modern story without pious intent; and finally, “Herodias” is a sumptuous retelling of the biblical episode in which an insecure and solitary Herod hesitates to execute the man held captive, known to some as John the Baptist.
