Denise Chen has lived her life according to everyone else's rules. So when a mysterious job offer promises life-changing money at an exclusive, off-grid wellness retreat, she ignores her instincts and accepts—hoping that, for once, she'll make her mother proud.

But Restful Spirit Sanctuary isn't what it seems.

The forest on the property—the one they're forbidden to enter—is full of whispers, and figures move within its shadows. Coworkers say it's the Lady in Red, a spirit trapped where she died. But this rumor can't be confirmed, since Denise and the other new staff aren't allowed to speak to the guests, who definitely aren't here for vacation. All they do is stare into the darkness within the trees. As if they're waiting for something.

The longer Denise stays at the retreat, the stranger things get: she finds cultural objects designed to ward away spirits, a hidden journal that's full of warnings, and hears someone weeping outside her cabin at night. When her coworkers begin to disappear, Denise realizes the forest isn't the only thing she should fear. Because the Lady in Red is desperate for a way out of the woods. And Denise may be the key to her escape…
