Ella, a small penguin on summer vacation, only has her eyes set on the wonders of the sky––how she wishes she could fly! The ocean, on the other hand, an endless abyss of the unknown, scares her. When her grandmother endeavors to teach her how to swim, Ella is reluctant at first, but eventually she begins to see the ocean––and especially herself––in a new light through her pink-colored goggles. As she adventures through the surprisingly colorful world of sea urchins, octopi, and mermaids, Ella realizes that swimming is not so different from flying after all, and that she is much braver than she gave herself credit for.

Through Mari Kanstad Johnsen’s vibrant and animated depictions of the natural world, readers are invited along on Ella’s journey as she uncovers the many treasures of the sky and the sea, and as her universe and confidence in herself expand.
