    Die Gestaltung der Lüneburger St. Johanniskirche als Hallenkirche mit fast gleich hohen Schiffen ist für die Zeit um 1300 sehr neuartig, der Bau wurde deshalb bald Vorbild für zahlreiche Hallenkirchen im norddeutschen Raum. Zu ihrer Ausstattung gehört unter anderem der prächtige Hauptaltar mit zahlreichen geschnitzten Darstellungen von Prozessionsbildern, Propheten und Apostelfiguren aus dem 15. Jahrhundert. Eine neuere Besonderheit ist die afrikanische Ebenholz-Weihnachtskrippe von 1970, ein seltenes Exemplar in Europa von Ernest Chibanga.
