Overview
Poet, playwright, and novelist, Ramón del Valle-Inclán was a leading member of Spain’s Generation of 1898, the writers and thinkers whose work produced a renaissance in Spanish intellectual and literary culture. His highly regarded Sonatas tetralogy, which appeared from 1902 to 1905, was hailed as the pinnacle of Spanish modernist prose and the beginning of modern Spanish literature.
The Sonatas, named for the four seasons, represent the memoirs of the Marquis of Bradomín, a Galician Don Juan. The Spring Sonata takes place in his youth, when he is consumed with passion for a beautiful young aristocratic woman--a paragon of purity whose chief desire in life is to join a convent. The story of their romance, a tale of ardor and innocence, is lively, moving, and surprising.
In addition to its detailed background information, the introduction features summaries of the other three Sonatas. This new translation is the first and only annotated edition of Spring Sonata and the only available dual-language edition.
