Overview
Rosetta Douglass Sprague: A Revolutionary Family Biography is the second book in the Douglass Family Lives: The Anna Murray and Frederick Douglass Family Biography and Collected Works multi-volume series
This book is the first full-length biography dedicated to sharing the heroic life stories of Rosetta Douglass Sprague. The eldest child born to Anna Murray and Frederick Douglass, a world-famous wife and husband freedom-fighting team, she was a trailblazing author, social justice campaigner, political radical, revolutionary educator, free thinker, intellectual visionary, and human rights philosopher.
This biography traces Rosetta Douglass Sprague’s life story as a frontline worker and death-defying laborer in the “cause of Freedom.” She dedicated her life’s work to her courageous battles for social, economic, emotional, intellectual, philosophical, cultural, and political independence.
Over twenty chapters, this book remembers her childhood activism, education battles, Underground Railroad labors, and human rights campaigns.
She did not work alone.
Working side by side with her family in their war on white supremacy and white racism, she was a renowned newspaper editor, journalist, educator, orator, civil rights leader, and community organizer fighting for Black liberation and equal rights for all.
Over the centuries, the entire Douglass Sprague family and all their descendants live their lives by Rosetta Douglass Sprague’s rallying cry, “I do not wish to be tyrannized over.”
