  • Overview

    ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

Romantic passion observed with clarity by one of the most acclaimed French authors of our time.

Starting in September of last year, I did nothing but wait for a man: for him to call me and come to see me. This is how the story begins, tracing the passion of a cultured, intelligent, financially independent woman, divorced and with grown children, who loses all restraint over a diplomat from Eastern Europe, a man who cultivates a resemblance to Alain Delon and has a marked fondness for fine clothes and flashy cars.

Although the subject that gives rise to this novel may seem trivial, the life that fuels it is anything but. Rarely has male sexuality or desire that overwhelms and distorts been written about with such stark frankness. Annie Ernaux’s stripped down and clinical prose draws the reader in with the precision of an entomologist observing an insect, plunging us into the feverish, ecstatic, and devastating delirium that any woman and any man, anywhere in the world, has undoubtedly experienced at least once in a lifetime.
