“It is interesting to wonder about the why of it all. Why is it that childbirth has such a psychic intensity? Why is it that the very hormones that command it produce the amorous experience? I’d like to think that the answer lies there, in love. Love between mothers and their sons or daughters, love as the foundation of the entire community and social evolution that has allowed for this fabulous brain development that produced language and human intelligence.
 
This is my proposition: to understand childbirth through psychology and neuroscience. Building on what women say about it, integrating their accounts on the experience of childbirth with the help of psychology, neuroendocrinology, and even neuroimaging.
