Overview
ONTO OO. Urbanity in context and concept
ONTO 00, the first issue of the series, breaks down the design processing into three steps: arranging, rearranging and design. These three steps are illustrated with examples from the studio experiment ‘Urbanity in context and concept’.
Arrange. The designer is a special kind of collector. The first action of a designer who is looking for the characteristic qualities of urbanity is the collection of images expressing urbanity. They do not collect with a classification system in mind; instead, the system arises during the course of collecting.
Rearrange. By bringing together images, new images, new meanings and new characters are created. The collage is a design tool par excellence.
Design. The designer does not believe in the scientific division between analysis and synthesis. The design process starts with the juxtaposition and rearrangement of what already exists, but does not originate from originality or geniality. Designing is a pseudo-science, whose exactness is always occasional and arises from the meaning of the relationship between the assembled parts.
ONTO 00 also includes an essay on architectural education and the city by Lara Schrijver and an architectural-philosophical essay on the idea of absent architecture by Jasper Van de Vijver.
