  • Overview

    ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

A hundred years after her birth, the relevance of Rosario Castellanos’s critical and committed vision reaffirms her as one of the essential voices of Mexican literature.

A group of Chamula indigenous people rise up in arms against those who, for centuries, have humiliated and dispossessed them of their lands. What begins as an uprising in the Highlands of Chiapas culminates in a biblical-scale event when one of them is proclaimed redeemer and crucified as the Indigenous Christ. A terrible act of self-immolation, occurring in the mid-19th century, that exposes the roots of a land divided by greed and fanaticism.

A masterpiece of Latin American narrative, in The Book of Lamentations (1962), Rosario Castellanos delves into history and its protagonists to understand the circumstances that led a people to such a harrowing event, through an extraordinary narration that portrays, in all its rawness, the oppression of the indigenous world.
