  • Overview

Miquel Cabal Guarro

    ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

Two of the author’s earliest works exploring melancholy, solitude, hope, and the disillusionment of love.

These two pieces belong to an early stage of the author’s production, before some of his great masterpieces such as Crime and Punishment or The Brothers Karamazov.

The setting of White Nights is the serene and luminous nights of the Petersburg spring, where successive encounters between two sensitive and passionate souls lead to the unveiling of their inner selves and their closeness. The question of whether a single moment of happiness can be worth an entire human life reverberates throughout the novella.

A Little Hero, the second story, features an eleven-year-old boy who falls in love with a married woman, sharing with the protagonists of the first tale the purity of spirit and innocence.

Love—the central theme in both works collected in this volume—becomes for him a decisive experience in the transition from childhood to adolescence.

White Nights and A Little Hero are two outstanding examples of Dostoevsky at his most luminous, with characters who devote themselves to the pursuit of happiness.” Miquel Cabal Guarro
