  • Overview

An illustrated middle grade modern folk tale exploring trauma and healing from the celebrated author-artist behind I Lost a Day and The Book of Selkie for readers of Snow & Rose and A Monster Calls.

Nina could draw herself as a bird, or at least draw herself a pair of wings, and she could fly away! Nina could even draw the somewhere else where she could go…somewhere safe, without people, and definitely a place a wolf couldn't find.

The first work of middle-grade fiction from celebrated artist Briana Corr Scott follows thirteen-year-old Nina, who lives with her two sisters, her mother, and her wolf-father in the woods. The Wolf hunts all night, sleeps most of the day—which is when the sisters experience "paper-cutting, glue-sticking, finger-painting, clay-smooshing joy"—and in between, has a temper that is unpredictable and frightening. When she's not sweeping up the Wolf's fur, or hiding from his growls, Nina dreams of growing wings and flying far away, to someplace safe.

The closest thing Nina and her sisters have to an escape is the attic, where they draw, and read, and cuddle together under the quilt Mama made for them. But Nina's real escape, her true salvation, is art. She draws and draws until her drawings become more real than the world around her, and she creates a magical, faraway place where no wolves exist. But can it save Nina and her family from the real Wolf before it's too late?

A modern fable, featuring gorgeous folk art?inspired black-and-white illustrations, lyrical prose and verse, Nina and the Wolf explores the reality of living with an abusive parent, and the power of creative therapy through art-making, with incredible candour and care.
