  • Overview

    ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

“Closeness to Andrés Manuel also meant taking risks, exposing oneself to the crossfire of visible and invisible enemies. Power in Mexico always watches, always punishes, and those who get too close to its circle of fire end up marked.” JULIO SCHERER IBARRA

Few have known Andrés Manuel López Obrador as profoundly as Julio Scherer Ibarra. For more than three decades, he closely accompanied his aspirations to transform politics and public life in Mexico. In doing so, he witnessed firsthand his personal and family side, as well as the political, institutional, and personal framework that shaped his trajectory until, on his third attempt, he reached the presidency of the country.

Through an intimate and reflective conversation with journalist Jorge Fernández Menéndez, the story of that bond forged in struggle is recorded. It also reveals the behind-the-scenes of recent Mexican history and the influence of key figures of democracy, such as Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas, Marcelo Ebrard, Alejandro Gertz Manero, and former presidents Enrique Peña Nieto and Felipe Calderón, among others. The book also describes the challenges of AMLO’s first three years in power, a period in which Scherer, in addition to serving as legal advisor to the presidency, was one of the most influential men in government, responsible for implementing profound changes and enshrining the president’s convictions into law.

This is a direct response to those who have criticized Scherer. It is an exercise in honesty and an indispensable testimony about the exercise of power and the scars that polarization has already left in Mexican history.
