From ’80s teen sitcom heartthrob to later fame after solving a string of real-life Hollywood murders, Jarrod Jarvis has rarely had a dull moment. But now in his late fifties, he’s happily settled into a quieter life in Palm Springs, taking the occasional bit role, and starting a new relationship with Secret Service agent Jim Stratton. Most of all, he has a newfound closeness with his 24-year-old daughter, Liv.

A true-crime podcast devotee, Liv is thrilled when her favorite podcaster-crush, charismatic Beau Langley, announces he’ll be involved in a limited series about an infamous 1990s desert cult murder—filming in Palm Springs! Even better, Jarrod is offered a small role. Liv promptly plants herself nearby to soak up every scrap of production drama. But she’s not expecting art to literally imitate life . . .

During shooting, the actress portraying the victim is found dead in her trailer—the crime scene eerily staged to mirror the real-life murder. The police deem it suicide. Jarrod and Liv disagree and are soon on the hunt for clues. Among their sprawling cast of suspects is a legendary producer who’s built a career on other people’s tragedies, a brilliant but controversial showrunner, a suspiciously jittery makeup artist, and an all-too-intense actor playing the cult leader.
