It has been over a hundred and fifty years since, but the complicity of the four March sisters, who sum up the critical spirit of the time in their gestures and words, continues to be a source of inspiration and joy for generations of readers that peek for the first time into the pages of this fascinating tale.
The introduction, by Princeton University Professor Elaine Showalter, one of the leading voices in feminist literary criticism, explores Alcott’s influences in depth and the impact Litte Women had in the work of great writers, such as Simone de Beauvoir or Joyce Carol Oates. The excellent translation by Gloria Méndez is accompanied by a few illustrations that first appeared in the 1880 edition, by the hand of American illustrator Frank T. Merrill.
