    Die von einer vollständig erhaltenen Umfassungsmauer aus dem 12. Jahrhundert umringte Klosteranlage Eberbach geht auf die Ansiedelung von Zisterziensermönchen im Rheingau zurück. Durch sie erlangte das Kloster seine Blüte, das im Sinne der abgeschiedenen Lebensweise der Zisterzienser als weitgehend unabhängiges Gemeinwesen bestand. Die romanischen Bauten mit teilweise gotischen Umbauten sind heute für kulturelle Aktivitäten der Allgemeinheit zugänglich.
