To everyone's surprise (her own most of all), our Miss Melville has become a darling of the New York City art world, and her paintings are selling like hotcakes. But you know, she does still like to keep her hand in. After all, when you're good at something, you want to keep doing it, with or without a financial motivation.

Besides which—this time it's personal. Susan's father, you may recall, disappeared many years ago into South America. True, he took the Melville millions with him, which irritated Susan no end. But he was her dear papa, and when she discovers that he was murdered for his money, Susan's trigger finger starts to twitch. It is possible to hold both a gun and a paintbrush. And it's a terrible sin to let a skill go to waste.
