  • Overview

The Milindapañha is one of the universal classics of Buddhism. Composed around the 2nd century BCE, the work consists of a philosophical dialogue between a Hellenistic king of Bactria—known in Pali as Milinda—and a wise Buddhist monk named Nagasena. After an engaging narrative introduction that describes the karmic connections between the two characters, the core of the work unfolds as a fascinating series of questions and answers. King Milinda, true to his Greek sophistic spirit, rigorously tests the coherence and meaning of the Buddha’s teachings, sparing no sharp wit. The monk Nagasena responds to each challenge with logical arguments, drawing on rich poetic similes and numerous citations from early Buddhist literature. The text represents an advance outpost—more than twenty centuries ahead of its time—of a Buddhism taught to Western audiences, and serves as an instructive and entertaining gateway to ancient Buddhist philosophy and literature.
