Endowed with a prodigious memory, he is capable of reciting entire compendiums of titles, authors, dates, and editions to everyone who comes to consult him. He lived oblivious to the world beyond the pages of his books until the Great War broke out in 1914 and he was interned in a concentration camp. Upon returning to Vienna once the war was over, nothing is as it was. This moving story is Zweig's best tribute to the world of books and booksellers.
