Overview
Die Kirche St. Maria zur Höhe wurde um 1220/30 aus dem in Soest gebrochenen Grünsandstein erbaut. Ihr Hauptportal schmückt ein reich figürlich verziertes romanisches Tympanon. Die Ausmalung der Kirche mit Ornamenten, Fabeltieren und Lebensbäumchen zählt zu den bemerkenswertesten des 13. Jahrhunderts, im nördlichen Seitenchor werden Szenen des Martyriums der Heiligen Katharina im 'Zackenstil', einem Übergangsstil zwischen Romanik und Gotik, dargestellt. Die monumentale Kreuzestafel im südlichen Seitenchor entstand um 1230 und ist in Europa bis auf vergleichbare Scheibenkreuze auf Gotland einzigartig.
