MARCUS AURELIUS, the sixteenth emperor of Rome (161 to 180) and the last of the so-called "Five Good Emperors," is the quintessential representative of the Golden Age of the Roman Empire and author of one of the greatest works of all time: Meditations, a collection of writings about his reflections on Stoic philosophy and its moral values. An excellent military strategist and public official, Marcus Aurelius strove to apply the teachings of Stoicism, focused on virtue, self-control, and the pursuit of the common good throughout his reign.
