  • Overview

    ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

“Manci hides two small pearls in the folds of her clothes, which she stopped from reaching their destiny under the bed. The women find her when she is about to rescue a third one. Since she couldn’t hide it and did not think of anything better, she puts the pearl in her mouth and swallows it before her mother’s finger can get it back.”

How many lives can there be in a single lifetime? This story begins before Manci is born and ends shortly after her death. In between there are eighty years of adventures, loves, and farewells that take place during most of the twentieth century, in a Transylvania that saw regimes bloom and wither like trees in a square.

In her dazzling first novel, Silvia Pasternac tells the story of a rebellious woman who always knew how to survive in an ingenious way, often enough against the edicts of society, even as the world around her was crumbling because of war and exile. With a navigator’s bravery mixed with the kind of honesty that was almost selfishness, Manci kept faithful to herself up to her last breath.

Only intelligent and sensitive narratives are capable of generating the sort of empathy that a character as unforgettable and unusual such as this one can arouse, outlined with the cleverness and sensibility of a good ear and a keen eye.
