Mafalda—along with her friends Felipe, Susanita, Manolito, Miguelito, and Libertad—is a symbol of our society. A non-conformist, supportive, sensitive little girl born in 1964, and as Quino said, “a child trying to solve the dilemma of who are the good guys and who are the bad guys in this world.” From the beginning, she showed a great critical spirit, and already in her first strips she was building a couch to psychoanalyze her doll. Nowadays, Mafalda still encourages us to ponder, to run away from prejudices, to love and dream of a better world, and we keep coming back to her to understand ourselves and the crazy world we live in.
“Mafalda is a hero of our time,” said Umberto Eco, Mafalda’s first editor in Europe. And the larger issues she addresses are those of all of humanity: love, solidarity, hate, jealousy, friendship, loneliness, incomprehension, empathy, fear...
