Overview
The Four Loves
This book is part of C. S. Lewis’ Signature Classics collection.
A lucid, direct, and example-filled reflection on one of life’s constant realities. In this book, C. S. Lewis examines the four basic types of human love: affection, friendship, eros, and charity.
The author explores the promise and the danger of love between parents and children; love between men and between women; love between man and woman; and the love of and for God, which elevates and transforms all love.
Lewis also addresses fundamental questions about sex, possessiveness, jealousy, pride, false sentimentality, manners in love, and the need for more laughter between lovers. There are risks that come with the rewards of love, Lewis warns, but he urges us to accept them—because “the only place outside Heaven where you can be perfectly safe from all the dangers and perturbations of love is Hell.”
Lewis reminds us that true love requires vulnerability, but to refuse love is to choose isolation. Love is both a need and a divine gift—an invitation to joy, connection, and transformation.
