  • Overview

    ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

A Valleinclanesco journey across the 20th century through the memories and travels of Jaime Fanjul.

The Extraordinary Years collects the memories of Jaime Fanjul, born in Salamanca in 1902 into a bourgeois family passionate about snakes, and proposes a Valleinclanesco journey across the 20th century through his memories and travels. There’s no fundamental aspect of the century that this prodigious novel does not recall: from the arrival of the sea in Salamanca to the short-lived boom in cars driven by thought; from the terrible cruelty of the Portuguese prisons to the war of Alicante against Spain (and the Dutch against the rest of the world); from the exploits of the Miseno, an underwater tunnel-traveling ship, to the unusual abilities of the Theosophists, capable of levitating a few inches above a chair; from the arrival -face down -of the man on theMoon to the location change of the city of Paris in 1940. In The Extraordinary Years there are children with ancient powers, slaves who terrorize their masters, ghosts with tailored clothes, the eighty-year-old girls, the Jews who change the weather, the fist fights with brave nuns, the workshops on how to ruin things... Jaime Fanjul travels the world telling everything that happens to him and how little he learns. Serious, observant, without complaint, he recalls his journey with unpredictable humor and poetic breath.
