Larry Bell

Larry Bell: All Glass brings together a career-spanning look at the artist’s work in the medium he is most-closely associated with—glass. Through his deep understanding of the material, Bell expands visual and physical fields of perception, as his crystal-like sculptures transcend traditional bounds of the medium. He has said, “Although we tend to think of glass as a window, it is a solid liquid that has, at once, three distinctive qualities: it reflects light, it absorbs light, and it transmits light all at the same time.”

Utilizing commercial industrial processes, including his own high-vacuum coating system that allows him to deposit thin metal films onto his glass surfaces, Bell has created a singular body of work in this material. In newly commissioned essays and a comprehensive chronology, this volume provides an in- depth look at the evolution in the artist’s thinking and making in the sixty years since he started exploring the spatial, perceptual, sculptural, and phenomenological possibilities of glass.
