  • Overview

    ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

Luis de la Fuente’s first autobiography in a World Cup year.

“When I select a player, I demand that he be a good person. And for me, a good person is someone with principles; and, in soccer, that means being supportive, generous, a team player with the ability to endure hardship, and putting the group before the individual."

You don’t reach the top by chance. Luis de la Fuente knows this well. Born in the town of Haro, in La Rioja, Luis learned early on that talent without hard work is not enough. Throughout his life, he has explored nearly every facet of soccer: he played for Athletic Club, Sevilla, and Alavés; he coached generations of young players on various teams; he served as a delegate for Athletic, as a national team coach in several age groups, and, finally, as head coach of the Spanish national team, with whom he won the Nations League in 2023 and the European Championship in 2024.

With his sights set on the Spanish national team’s upcoming major challenges, in this book De la Fuente shares his story and his approach to soccer for the first time. A journey marked by patience and firm convictions, difficult decisions, and trust in his players. The coach discusses how to manage a group under intense pressure, his commitment to young talents like Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams, and the certainty that no individual is above the team.

Beyond the matches and titles, these pages recount how his vision of soccer and life took shape: the responsibility of leadership, respect for the process, faith in daily work, and a spirituality that has quietly accompanied every stage of his career. This is the perspective of a man who has made commitment his personal hallmark and who views competition as a constant challenge, starting with himself.

Because, on and off the pitch, life is a daily training session.
