Durante octubre y noviembre de 2022, Juan Gabriel Vásquez fue invitado por la Universidad de Oxford a dictar las conferencias de la prestigiosa cátedra Weidenfeld de Literatura Europea Comparada, en la que antes participaron autores de la talla de Mario Vargas Llosa, George Steiner, Umberto Eco, Javier Cercas y Ali Smith. En esas cuatro ponencias, aquí reunidas, Vásquez se pregunta si hay en la ficción literaria una manera de comprender la vida que no pueda encontrarse en ningún otro espacio. ¿Es la literatura el lugar donde el mundo es traducido, interpretado e iluminado? Acaso la ficción tenga una capacidad única para dilucidar las complejidades de la experiencia humana —el misterio de cada vida, nuestro vínculo con el pasado, la tensa relación que mantenemos con el universo delo político— y transformar esa interpretación en conocimiento. Estos textos nos piden que redefinamos los usos de la ficción, nuestra comprensión de sus mecanismos y las razones por las cuales, en nuestra época actual, es probablemente más indispensable que nunca.

Vásquez demuestra con estas reflexiones su gran estatura intelectual y el dominio de su oficio, que lo llevaron a ser conferenciante y escritor residente en las aulas de Oxford y que lo han hecho merecedor de premios tan importantes como el International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, el Prix du Meilleur Livre Étranger y el Premio Real Academia Española, entre otros.

“The task and the duty of a writer are those of an interpreter,” Marcel Proust wrote in In Search of Lost Time. But Proust wasn’t referring to texts; rather, he meant interpreting life.  

In October and November 2022, the British Comparative Literature Association invited Juan Gabriel Vásquez to lead its prestigious Weidenfeld Lecture Series at Oxford University, joining the ranks of such luminaries as Mario Vargas Llosa, George Steiner, Umberto Eco, Javier Cercas and Ali Smith. In the four lectures compiled here, Vásquez asks whether literary fiction offers an understanding of life that can’t be found elsewhere.  Is literature the place where we translate, interpret and illuminate the world? Fiction may be uniquely able to shed light on the complexities of the human experience – the mystery of each life, our links to the past, our tense relationship with the political universe – and transform that interpretation into knowledge. These lectures ask us to redefine the uses of fiction and how we understand what it does, arguing that, in our present time, it may be more indispensable than ever.

In these reflections, Vásquez demonstrates his formidable intellectual stature and command of his profession. He is a resident author and lecturer at Oxford and the winner of such prestigious awards as the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, France’s Prix du Meilleur Livre Étranger and the Premio Real Academia Española.
