Overview
ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
Kundera has the gift of saying in the most crystalline way what is most difficult to say to oneself.
From the charming gesture of a woman of a certain age, the writer creates the character of Agnes, around whom will appear her sister Laura, her husband Paul, and our entire contemporary world that worships technology and image. But what if man were nothing but his image?, asks another character, Rubens, who finally realizes that of the most exciting of his lovers, he only has two or three mental photographs left. This novel transforms all aspects of the modern world into metaphysical questions. The adventures of imaginary characters mix with the story of two candidates for immortality, Goethe and Bettina von Armin; the reflection on the birth of homo senti-mentalis in the history of Europe alternates with the Parisian adventures of the singular professor Avenarius, for whom today's world serves only as an object of play.
