Overview
ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
A portrayal of everyday, family pain, expressed with beauty, precision, and unsettling intensity that disturbs the viewer’s peace.
The last play Lorca completed, though he never saw it performed. The poet never commented on it, making it one of his most enigmatic works.
Starring ordinary people from the village, rejecting heroism, La casa de Bernarda Alba portrays the harshness of family pain to its ultimate consequences. Lorca chose a theater meant to be staged, with an accessible plot, and therefore profoundly critical and effective in confronting the audience with its own mask. He achieved this with a beautiful and precise expression, pure dramatic poetry, supported by unsettling words that “disturb the viewer’s rest.”
