Er rauchte sein Leben lang die letzte Zigarette und frönte der Literatur wie einem geheimen Laster: Italo Svevo, eigentlich Ettore Schmitz (1861–1928). In der habsburgischen Hafenmetropole Triest musste er sich mit Büroarbeit über Wasser halten – und veröffentlichte just 1892 den ersten Angestelltenroman der Weltliteratur. Für den schmucklosen Stil des Österreichers hatte man in Italien jedoch keinen Sinn. Entmutigt schwor Svevo der Schriftstellerei ab und wurde ein erfolgreicher Unternehmer. Erst sein Privatlehrer James Joyce weckte wieder seine literarischen Ambitionen. Maike Albath spürt den unerwarteten Wendungen in Svevos Leben nach und zeigt die bahnbrechende Modernität von Romanen wie "Zenos Gewissen".
