In Image + Likeness, the much-anticipated follow-up to his National Poetry Series–winning debut Tender Headed, Olatunde Osinaike presents a formally inventive meditation on how Black life is seen, recorded, and distorted—examining the camera as a vessel and the image as a site where history, memory, and harm collide.
Braiding together four exhibits that span confession, religion, economy, and desire, these vivid, meditative poems trace the shifting architecture of intimacy in Black life, most clearly revealed in moments when dominant ways of seeing shape how relationships, belonging, and possibility are understood.
Moving through a range of forms—from tanka to abecedarian to the invented “rendition”—the collection explores exploitation and the labor of being perceived fairly, pressing against both idealization and self-erasure. With lyric as its throughline, Image + Likeness considers how acts of recording determine what is seen and what is obscured.
