Overview
This is a compilation of A. Aubrey Bodine’s work that centered on horses: what they did, how they did it, and how they were treated during the mid-twentieth century. He captured the essence and sentimental journey of the horse as a pictorialist and a documentarian while he was a feature photographer for the Baltimore Sunday Sun. These pictures include horses in sport: steeplechase races, harness races, thoroughbred races, foxhunts, and horse shows. These images demonstrate a variety of horses working as transportation, urban and rural, and horses doing all manner of hard labor. Included are horse farms where horses were born, raised, and trained. Some of Bodine’s most arresting images are of horses he saw at pasture.
