  • Overview

Lucy does not like the dark—she prefers things bright and cozy.

But she’s heading off on a school camping trip, and the nights in the country are full of shadows just waiting to pounce. When her teacher announces a night hike, Lucy gets out all her flashlights and lanterns...but she has to leave those behind and use a special red-light flashlight that hardly keeps the shadows away. Why isn’t anyone else scared?

Then her teacher says it’s time to turn off their flashlights, so Lucy takes a deep breath and turns hers off. What she finds is magical: the night sky full of stars. The city lights have been hiding them. And Lucy realizes that the dark can be beautiful after all.
