Overview
ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
“Fortuitous: that which happens unexpectedly and by chance. Fortuitous birth: the unexpected news of an unknown pregnancy and of which no doctor can account for before it is too late... The unforeseeable and terrifying moment when you feel as if an elastic band ‘snaps’ inside you. Fortuitous allegation: finding yourself unexpectedly and overnight, without ever having committed a crime, being judged as a murderer under the same kind of offense than that of a man who stabs someone to death. Unexpected, casual, fortuitous.”
Journalist Luciana Wainer presents the other side of criminalization of abortion in Mexico. In this book, she documents and reconstructs—through testimonies, interviews, files, and data—the stories of five women: Dafne, Susana, Aurelia, Malena, and Imelda, imprisoned after a miscarriage, a fortuitous birth, an obstetric emergency, and sentenced severely for homicide or homicide by reason of kinship. Barely five stories among hundreds, maybe thousands, that remain in the dark due to legal devises and loopholes that make them impossible to track in a society where violence reigns. Fortuitous is, in itself, a cry denouncing this patriarchal system that insists on monitoring and punishing women’s bodies.
