Overview

WINNER OF THE 2025 LUMEN NOVEL PRIZE
A rural thriller and anti-novel of initiation where tenderness flourishes despite the darkness, by the winner of five poetry prizes.
Gabi is a quick-witted and sensitive boy whose world revolves around the country house he shares with his parents and three older brothers, who entertain themselves by making his life impossible. Maybe it’s because he’s the youngest, is forced to wear gloves because of the warts on his hands, and is mother’s favorite, or maybe it’s just that he’s different. Whatever the reason, to avoid his siblings and his father’s rages, he seizes on any excuse to leave the house. He visits the neighbor, Marcela, who seems to have a cure for every ailment, or roams the countryside with Sombra, his dog. With her by his side, he feels less alone, almost safe from the violence around him. One summer night, however, the crickets suddenly go silent as tragedy strikes the family. Gabi sees it all, except for the face of the perpetrator, but he knows it must be someone close. Determined to unmask the attacker, he starts investigating, bringing to light secrets that bear with them devastating consequences.
