  • Overview

Indigenous Futurism from a debut creator

What is even the point of high school? You don’t actually learn anything useful. At least that’s how seventeen-year-old Nina Peter feels. Her dad doesn’t say much about their Nuu-chah-nulth heritage, her step-mom and step-sister are great, but they don’t really understand the things that are important to Nina. The world has changed. It’s mostly underwater. The little land that’s left is being exploited by corporations to make the rich even richer at the expense of Nina’s community. What about their culture? What about their lands? What about their medicines?

As protests around AlwaysBrite’s latest land-use project increase at Site 17, so does the police presence. When a livestream shows Nina’s fellow classmate, seventeen-year-old environmental activist Genevieve (Jen) Henry, being detained by New Van police, Nina knows she must act. But what can one person do against the corporate machine? Nina isn’t alone though, Fancy Shawl dancer Allison Combs, anti-establishment rebel Mo Adayo, and Jen’s older cousin Ashton Henry band together with accomplished hackers Avery and Tegan to answer the question that’s been spreading across the online and offline community: “Where is Genevieve Henry?”
