After leaving Corfu (the story of Durrell's life there is told in Fauna and Family), Durrell, his mother, his brother Leslie and their Greek maid Maria Kondos moved back to Britain in 1939. It was difficult to find work, especially for a home-schooled boy, but Durrell managed to land a job as a helper at an aquarium and pet store. The story of these years, with the Durrells back in England, is told in Fillets of Plaice. You can read this book for the humor alone (for Durrell did perceive his family as some rarefied species) but between the lines you can discern the makings of a world-class naturalist and a cultivated and engaging writer. That story is told in the next book in the series, Beasts in My Belfry).
