Overview
The Living Thoughts of Montaigne.
ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
An essential anthology that gathers the most revealing passages from Montaigne’s Essays, accompanied by André Gide’s intelligent and sensitive commentary.
Michel de Montaigne (1533–1592) is the author of a single book, The Essays. The success of his work would be inexplicable without his extraordinary personality. In these pages, following the maxim of the Delphic oracle—“know thyself”—the author takes himself as the object of study, as literary material. With the conviction that each individual contains within himself the essence of humanity, Montaigne offers a description of human nature in general.
His writings flow with the events of his life and his readings, without a predetermined plan or rigid method, guided instead by curiosity and the movement of thought itself.
This edition revives the anthology commissioned by Longmans of New York to André Gide—Nobel Prize winner and one of the great writers of the twentieth century—The Living Thoughts of Montaigne. It is a magnificent selection designed to bring the living, vibrant voice of the French thinker closer to the modern reader.
