  • Overview

A lyrical, meditative exploration of how Francis of Assisi transformed a city—and how pilgrims today can still encounter his power.

Eight hundred years after St. Francis died, Assisi’s beauty and mystery still call to travelers from all over the world. It is a distinct place beyond time, where the saint roamed and rebuilt and where people go to find themselves today. Writer and teacher C. W. Höjer examines its sacred geography. Francis’s presence, his choices, and his radical enactment of Gospel poverty left an imprint on the pink limestone streets that has not faded in eight centuries.

The narrative moves between historical reconstruction—Francis stripping naked in the piazza, rebuilding San Damiano stone by stone, choosing the hermitage’s compression over the city’s comfort—and the contemporary experience of pilgrims encountering the same spaces and discovering the same pattern at work in their own lives and in their own cities and towns. Rather than presenting Franciscan spirituality as doctrine to be learned, the book reveals it as a pattern to be walked: four forms of sacred space (hermitage, chapel, basilica, piazza), a rhythm of engagement and withdrawal, and a way of possessing nothing while inhabiting everything fully. The final chapters guide readers in finding their own “stone, forms, and rhythm” in whatever cities they inhabit, making the pattern transferable rather than merely admirable.
