Overview
ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
The Kingdom of This World is a dazzling tale set in the improvised royal court of Henri Christophe in Haiti. It depicts a world of passions unfolding amid a fierce caricature of the Bonapartist court, built with the raw elements of a Caribbean island where tyranny has brutally changed its name, and where the echoes of the drum resound in the brass of uniforms and the tassels of embroidered mitres of pretended bishops.
This edition also includes the famous prologue in which Carpentier coined the term “lo real maravilloso”, which he considered the best definition of the idiosyncrasy of the American continent, where miracle and magic are part of the very essence of culture.
