  • Overview

    ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

Given the major decisions Hitler was making—decisions that affected millions—it’s worth asking how his behavior may have been influenced by the numerous medications he consumed, from stimulants to sedatives, hormones to multivitamins, steroids to belladonna and cocaine.

Half a century ago, Joachim Fest published one of the most important biographies of the German dictator, titled Hitler. At the time, he claimed: “This is the most complete version of events, covering all facets of Adolf Hitler’s life. […] This is the final word on this man, because there will be no new revelations about Hitler that aren’t already public.”

However, the declassification of all historically significant documents related to Nazi Germany has proven Fest’s statement wrong. Among millions of pages, researchers uncovered records detailing Hitler’s health and the widespread drug use among German army members—including Hitler himself.

For the last nine years of his life, Adolf Hitler—a lifelong hypochondriac—was treated by Dr. Theodor Morell. Hitler’s mood swings, Parkinson’s disease, gastrointestinal symptoms, skin issues, and steady decline leading up to his suicide in April 1945 are all documented in Morell’s meticulous medical diaries.
