Overview
ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
One of Thich Nhat Hanh’s classic works, now part of the author’s library collection.
The Miracle of Mindfulness was originally a long letter. The Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh founded, in the 1960s, the School of Youth for Social Service —established in southern Vietnam in 1974— as a result of “engaged Buddhism.” This school attracted committed young people who helped rebuild bombed villages, taught children, set up medical centers, and organized agricultural cooperatives. However, these methods of reconciliation were misunderstood, so Thich Nhat Hanh wrote this letter from his exile in France to remind them of the essential discipline of following the breath to sustain and maintain a mindful and serene state, even in the most difficult circumstances.
He reminds us that every moment—washing the dishes, answering the phone, or peeling an orange—offers an opportunity to know ourselves more deeply and enjoy greater inner peace.
