After masterfully portraying the figure of the guilty party in Crime and Punishment, Dostoevsky delves into The Idiot and explores the tortured soul of an innocent man. After spending several years in a Swiss sanatorium, the young and pious Prince Myshkin returns to his native Russia to claim an inheritance and “mingle with the people.”
However, in St. Petersburg, he is met only by a society obsessed with money, power, and manipulation, which will test his values and his innocence. Before reaching his destination, he meets the unsettling Rogozhin, son of a wealthy merchant, whose fixation on the beautiful Nastasia Filippovna will ultimately drag the three protagonists toward a fatal conclusion.
This edition features the masterful translation by José Laín Entralgo and Augusto Vidal. The introductory study is by William Mills Todd III, professor of Slavic languages and literature at Harvard University.
